Kitchen is the heart of your home

If your kitchen is due for a fix-up, consider using reclaimed wood in your remodel. You can incorporate the beauty and history of salvaged wood almost anywhere in your kitchen. From the floors to the cabinets, to the ceiling, there are endless possibilities in designs and styles that incorporate repurposed wood. The above image features a gorgeous kitchen, designed by Morris Design Inc., that utilizes some of our reclaimed wood for the open shelves. Morris Design was a delight to work with and the kitchen turned out great!

Why use reclaimed wood in the kitchen?

Reclaimed timber provides many overall benefits, but in the kitchen it is especially appreciated. The strength and durability of reclaimed wood is great for withstanding the wear and tear of a well-used kitchen. Whether you’re dropping cans on the hardwood floor or spilling drinks on the countertop, reclaimed wood is much better than the alternative fresh-cut wood. Not only is it strong, but with its age and character the new marks from your family will only blend into the textures from its previous life. Additionally, the history embedded in salvaged wood immediately adds a comforting age to a brand new kitchen. Avoid the uncomfortable adjustment to the sterile, fresh-remodel look with a bit of repurposed timber. The one-of-a-kind details in the wood gives your kitchen unique character in addition to the warmth that wood always brings into a room.

Where do you repurpose salvaged wood in the kitchen?

  • Floors – As mentioned before, reclaimed wood makes for a durable hardwood floor. It also incorporates wood throughout the kitchen in one fell swoop, creating that warm comforting feeling all through the heart of your home. Additionally, reclaimed timber can provide wider pieces of lumber than hardware stores which are great for a more unique or rustic floor.reclaimed wood kitchen
  • Open shelves – Adding a few open shelves in a kitchen can vary the aesthetic and visually open up a space that would otherwise be another uniform kitchen cabinet. Reclaimed wood planks used for this purpose help to create more of a statement section in your kitchen. Use thicker pieces here in order to emphasize the unique texture and grain along the front edge of the shelf.
  • Cabinets – Create a modern eclectic feel in your kitchen by combining the rustic aspect of reclaimed wood and a modern handle or knob. This great combination can add warmth to a modern kitchen while still fitting the style you want.
  • Ceilings/walls – If your kitchen is lacking a homey feel, apply reclaimed wood panelling to the walls–or even the ceiling. Installing a hanging light fixture in the middle of a wood ceiling can create a perfect ambiance especially when centered above an island.
  • reclaimed wood kitchen islandCounters/bars – Whether you want a wooden island or a breakfast bar, reclaimed wood has the versatility to provide you with something you’ll love. Not only will your kitchen benefit from this sturdy surface material, it can create a one-of-a-kind conversation piece that stands out for all your guests to admire. Utilize reclaimed timber for an accent counter, a unique island or breakfast bar. Just be sure to wipe up any spills to prevent long term damage to the wood.

The kitchen is the heart of your home. So make sure that the atmosphere it creates is one that really reflects your family.
